Week 3 Recap and Standings

A wild weekend in Saskatoon saw four different games decided by a walk-off or a late-inning rally, with bats staying loud from Friday through Sunday.

Saskatoon played host to Week 3 of the season, and if you blinked you missed a lead change. Four games were decided in the final at-bat, including back-to-back walk-off wins for Mount Royal on Sunday, and several more were flipped by big innings mid-game. Here’s how each team’s weekend went.

UBC Okanagan turned in the most complete weekend in the league, going 4-1 across five games. They opened with an 8-4 win over Calgary before a six-run first inning carried them past Saskatchewan 10-3. Their only loss came in a wild one against Lethbridge, who scored the winning run in the bottom of the fifth to escape with a 9-8 win. UBC Okanagan closed the weekend in dominant fashion, shutting out Regina 9-0 and then piling up 14 runs to take down Mount Royal.

Willa Bonsall was the engine of the offense all weekend, collecting three hits in both the win over Regina and the rout of Mount Royal, plus multiple stolen bases along the way. Katie Nelson and Taylor McRae stayed hot in the middle of the lineup, and the Sunday win over Mount Royal was a true team effort, with Nelson, Kate Lawrence, Maya Holmes, Tayan Treadwell, and Avery Lamb all driving in multiple runs.

Victoria matched UBC Okanagan win for win, finishing 4-1 on the weekend with their only loss coming in a Sunday shutout at the hands of Calgary. They opened with a win over Lethbridge, escaped a back-and-forth battle with Calgary, and then needed a late rally to beat Mount Royal before closing out SAIT in a rout.

Lauren Parsons was the story of Saturday, collecting three hits including the tying and go-ahead single in the eighth inning to beat Mount Royal. Celina Bhatti provided the power early with a three-run homer against Lethbridge, and Madelaine Akiyama and Kristen Bertelsen combined for the late-game heroics that flipped the result against Calgary. Sunday belonged to Hudsyn Milne, who went a perfect four-for-four to power the win over SAIT.

Mount Royal’s weekend had as many highs as lows, finishing 3-2. Katie Thiemann homered twice and drove in six to open the weekend with a blowout of SAIT, and Riley Chapman turned in a gem in the circle to shut down Saskatchewan. They dropped a tight one to Victoria and were run over by UBC Okanagan after leading by five runs early, but bounced back to close the weekend with a walk-off win over Regina.

Thiemann was the headline performer of the weekend for Mount Royal, but she got plenty of help — Grace Cleland drove in three in the win over Saskatchewan, and Riley Chapman contributed both in the circle and at the plate throughout. The weekend’s signature moment came from Ava Wurzer, whose seventh-inning double sealed the walk-off win over Regina on Sunday.

University of Lethbridge

Lethbridge also finished 3-2, and their weekend was defined by a knack for finding a way to win close ones. After dropping the opener to Victoria, they blanked Regina, then survived a back-and-forth slugfest with UBC Okanagan on a walk-off walk before beating SAIT. Their only other loss came in the finale, a shutout at the hands of Saskatchewan.

Jenna Funk provided the highlight of the weekend with a three-run homer in the win over Regina, and Natalie Kerr came up with the winning run in extras against UBC Okanagan. Devyn Rice was steady all weekend, driving in the go-ahead runs against SAIT, while Malia Van Doren and Molly Conrad each chipped in multi-hit performances to keep the lineup deep.

Saskatchewan started slow but finished strong, going 3-3 on the weekend. They dropped their first three games, including a tough 3-0 loss in a pitcher’s duel with Mount Royal, before finding their footing with a win over SAIT on Saturday and a doubleheader sweep of Calgary and Lethbridge to close out Sunday.

Rhyan Amundson was the catalyst for the turnaround, driving in four runs on three hits in the win over SAIT and staying hot the rest of the weekend. Allyson McAvoy did it all for Saskatchewan, picking up a win in relief and another as a starter while also driving in three runs at the plate. Gracie Lawson and Makenna Pilbeam were steady presences in the lineup all weekend long.

Calgary went 2-3 on a weekend of near-misses, dropping their opener to UBC Okanagan and a tight one to Victoria before finding their footing. They beat Regina on the strength of a big third inning, then fell to Saskatchewan on Sunday before closing the weekend with a statement shutout of Victoria.

Mia Pielak drove in three runs to power the win over Victoria, and Brooklyn Bianchini and Olivia Goertz were the driving forces in the win over Regina. Madison Belden anchored the pitching staff with a one-hit outing in the Sunday finale, and Katie Berg was a steady presence at the top of the lineup all weekend.

University of Regina

Regina’s weekend started with promise but faded down the stretch, finishing 2-4. Rhyan Sigmeth tossed a complete game to open the weekend with a win over Saskatchewan, and Regina rallied from a 6-2 deficit for a walk-off win over SAIT the next day. From there, though, the losses piled up, capped by a heartbreaking walk-off loss to Mount Royal in the finale.

Madilynn Geiss was Regina’s most consistent bat all weekend, including a four-for-four day against SAIT. Merceydes Therrien and Lauren Nixon gave Regina a dangerous one-two punch in the loss to Calgary, each driving in two runs, and Sigmeth continued to do it all for Regina, both starting and closing games from the circle.

SAIT

It was a difficult weekend for SAIT, who were unable to find a win across five games. They fell in blowouts to Mount Royal and Saskatchewan, dropped a heartbreaker to Regina after leading 6-2, and lost to both Victoria and Lethbridge to close things out.

There were still individual bright spots. Makayla Douglas drove in two runs in the loss to Regina, and Joceline Keller went two-for-three with two RBI in the finale against Lethbridge. Christina Van De Velde and Alex Thain also chipped in multi-hit efforts across the weekend as SAIT looks to regroup heading into Week 4.

Standings

This week’s standings remain largely unchanged. The only difference: MRU moves from the 7th to the 6th spot. The rest is in line with week 2. University of Victoria and UBCO are neck and neck for the top spot. While they both have won the same amount of games, Victoria has one more loss, leaving them in the 2nd position based on win percentage. Calgary, Lethbridge, and Saskatchewan all hang tight to their respective places. Regina drops down one spot to #7 while SAIT remains in #8.
