Week 2 Recap and Standings

17 of 18 games get played despite a soggy Saturday, with bats staying hot all over the diamond.

6–8 minutes

It was a soggy one at the Shouldice diamonds this weekend, but you’d hardly know it from the scoreboards. Persistent rain forced some tough calls on Saturday, pushing several games into Sunday’s schedule, but thanks to flexible teams, umpires, and field crews, 17 of 18 scheduled games got played. The lone game that couldn’t be salvaged, SAIT vs. UBC Okanagan, will be made up at a later date, TBD.

Here’s how each team’s weekend went.

University of Lethbridge

Lethbridge was the story of the weekend, ripping off four wins in five games and doing it with some of the loudest bats in the tournament. They put up 16, 19, and 14 runs in three separate wins over Saskatchewan, Regina, and Mount Royal before their bats finally cooled in a loss to Calgary, then bounced back to close the weekend with a win over SAIT.

The headline performer was Natalie Kerr, who put together one of the weekend’s signature moments — a grand slam against Mount Royal to cap a game in which she drove in four runs on a single hit, backing up an earlier four-RBI game against Regina that also featured a home run. Jenna Funk was right there with her, homering and racking up multiple three- and four-hit games, while Molly Conrad, Malia Van Doren, and Cadence Penner all chipped in multi-hit efforts across the weekend to keep the lineup humming from top to bottom.

University of Victoria

Victoria was the model of consistency, going 4-1 on the weekend with wins in every game except a narrow loss to Saskatchewan on Saturday. They opened with an 11-4 win over Calgary on Friday and closed strong, including a tight 4-3 comeback win over Regina on Sunday after trailing early.

Madison Hillman set the tone all weekend, collecting multiple three-hit games and going deep more than once, while Lauren Parsons matched her with a four-RBI, two-hit outing highlighted by a home run against Calgary. Kristen Bertelsen provided steady pop across the weekend, and Celina Bhatti came through in the clutch with the go-ahead RBI in Sunday’s win over Regina.

Calgary put together a strong 3-2 weekend, and their two best performances came at the perfect time — a pair of run-rule-adjacent blowouts to close things out on Sunday, including a 14-3 win over Lethbridge and a 15-4 win over Mount Royal. Their lone bright spot on Saturday was a gritty comeback win over UBC Okanagan after trailing by four.

Brooklyn Bianchini was Calgary’s spark plug, driving in four runs including a home run against Lethbridge, while Parker Huot put together a huge weekend of her own — two home runs, including a grand slam against Lethbridge, and five RBI in that game alone. Olivia Goertz was right there too, capping the weekend going 4-for-5 with three RBI against Mount Royal. Katie Berg and Angelina Hargreaves rounded out a deep, dangerous lineup that found another gear as the weekend went on.

UBC Okanagan

UBC Okanagan went 3-1 in the games they were able to play, with their only blemish a heartbreaker against Calgary after building a 7-3 lead. They bounced back with dominant wins over Regina and Saskatchewan on Sunday to close out their weekend on a high note. Their scheduled game against SAIT was the only one lost to weather and will be made up at a later date.

Emmersen Bonville and Willa Bonsall provided the power all weekend, while Katie Nelson and Taylor McRae were steady run producers throughout. Emma Pepin added a multi-hit, multi-stolen-base performance early in the weekend, and the pitching staff, anchored by Danica Chaske and Kate Hourihane, kept the opposition off balance all weekend long.

University of Saskatchewan

Saskatchewan had a mixed weekend, finishing 2-3, with their two wins coming against Victoria on Saturday and Mount Royal on Sunday. They dropped a high-scoring shootout to Lethbridge and closed the weekend with back-to-back losses to UBC Okanagan and Regina.

Makenna Pilbeam was the story for Saskatchewan, launching two home runs and driving in four in the win over Victoria. Rachel Siwak turned in a four-for-four day at the plate against Mount Royal, and Courtney Frohaug added multiple home runs of her own over the weekend. Rhyan Amundson was a steady presence in the lineup as well, coming through with multi-hit, multi-RBI games late in the weekend.

University of Regina

Regina went 1-3-1 on the weekend, opening with a hard-fought 7-7 tie against Mount Royal before running into a buzzsaw against Lethbridge. They dropped close games to UBC Okanagan and Victoria before finally breaking through with a win over Saskatchewan on Sunday.

Rhyan Sigmeth did a bit of everything for Regina, both pitching heavy innings and producing at the plate, including a triple in the loss to Victoria. Lauren Nixon and Madilynn Geiss were consistent contributors throughout the weekend, and Merceydes Therrien delivered the biggest swing of Regina’s weekend — a go-ahead, two-run home run in the sixth inning to beat Saskatchewan on Sunday.

Mount Royal University

Mount Royal had a tough weekend, finishing 1-3-1, with their win coming in a Friday rout of SAIT. After that, they battled to a tie with Regina but couldn’t find the same magic the rest of the way, dropping close ones to Lethbridge and Saskatchewan before a lopsided loss to Calgary to close things out.

Riley Chapman was Mount Royal’s best all-around performer, collecting three hits in the opening win and following it up with strong outings both at the plate and in the circle. Grace Cleland and Sara Trevis each turned in multi-hit games, and Katie Thiemann provided a spark with a home run against Lethbridge. Abbygale Sheridan capped the weekend with a two-hit, two-RBI effort in Sunday’s finale.

SAIT

It was a rough weekend for SAIT, who went 0-4 in the games they were able to play, with their scheduled game against UBC Okanagan postponed by weather and still to be made up.

Despite the results, there were bright spots individually. Kara Formella went 2-for-2 with two RBI in Friday’s loss to Mount Royal, and Alex Thain matched that with a 2-for-2 day against UBC Okanagan on Saturday. On Sunday, Leah Johnson drove in three runs against Lethbridge, with Madalyn Friedt and Makayla Douglas adding multi-hit efforts of their own. SAIT will look to regroup before their next outing, with the makeup game against UBC Okanagan still on the schedule.

Standings

With the second week of the season complete, standings have shifted considerably. UBCO remains on top, with Victoria taking big strides up into the number two spot. Calgary maintains a top-three position while Lethbridge also sneaks their way much higher up the ladder than last weekend. Saskatchewan and Regina drop down to the fifth and sixth place positions while Mount Royal and SAIT round out the seventh and eighth spots.

Rain or not, the weekend delivered no shortage of standout performances. Natalie Kerr’s grand slam heroics to Rachel Siwak and Riley Chapman’s four-hit days helped set the tone for a tightly packed standings race heading into the next round of games in Saskatoon.
