HOW IT HAPPENED

The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns Women’s Softball team kicked off their season with a dominant weekend performance at Shouldice Athletic Park in Calgary, finishing with a perfect 5–0 record. The weekend started with an 8–1 win over the SAIT Trojans, highlighted by Molly Conrad’s clutch hitting and a strong outing in the circle from Logan Chin. The Pronghorns carried that momentum into Saturday’s games, storming back from a 7-run deficit to top the University of Victoria 14–8, powered by Jenna Funk’s four-RBI performance, before out-slugging Mount Royal University 17–11 in an offense-packed matchup.

Sunday brought more drama as Lethbridge showcased their resilience against UBCO, rallying from five runs down to earn a thrilling 10–9 victory. Funk delivered again, driving in the go-ahead runs with a key double in the sixth inning, while Katelyn Giesbrecht shut the door in relief. The Horns capped off the weekend with a 6–3 win over SAIT in their second meeting, thanks to a decisive fifth-inning rally led by Sarah MacPherson, Raquel McGratton, and Claire Machnee, and airtight defense that kept the Trojans off the board late.

With contributions from across the lineup, explosive offense, and steady pitching, the Pronghorns proved themselves a force in the league’s opening weekend. The team combined for 55 runs across five games, with standout performances from Funk, Conrad, McGratton, and Cadence Penner leading the way. Lethbridge also showed their versatility on the bases and in the field, turning key double plays and capitalizing on opportunities at every turn.

The middle of the pack is tightly contested. The University of Regina sits at 2–3, while the SAIT Trojans and the University of Saskatchewan each hold a single win and are working to climb higher. Mount Royal University also has one win on the board, but will look to tighten up defensively after allowing a league-high 52 runs.

It’s still early in the season, but the standings already show signs of an exciting year ahead. Lethbridge and Victoria have set the pace, yet plenty of room remains for movement as teams settle in and new players make their mark.

WHO TO WATCH

Keep an eye on the University of Saskatchewan. Last season, they finished second in the WCSA playoffs, falling only to UBCO in the final by a score of 5–2.

This year they’ve brought in eight new additions—four of whom played previously in the USA—making it the largest non-rookie signing class in the league. With this kind of experience, the U of S are expected to find their rhythm soon and rise in the standings as the season progresses.
