Battle of Lethbridge

The Lethbridge Pronghorns hosted the WCSA teams on September 17 and 18 at the Coaldale Diamonds. It was great fall ball weather. This WCSA season is shaping up to be one of the best ever as all teams are competitive and every team can beat any other on any given day.

Lethbridge was an exceptional host and also played a strong weekend of softball. Highlights included wins over Regina and UBCO and a close fought game against Calgary. Calgary continues to play exceptionally well with 4 close wins and a 10-10 tie with UBCO to finish the weekend. UBCO started strong with two wins but had three losses in a row to Regina, SAIT, and Lethbridge. The hard fought tie with Calgary in the last game will help make the 11 hour bus ride home easier.

SAIT keeps getting better and had their best weekend yet with 3 wins and 3 losses. Exciting games with UBCO included a football-like score loss of 9 to 18, and a 9 to 7 win by scoring 6 runs in the last inning to win. Regina had two wins; one over provincial rival Saskatchewan and the other over UBCO in a 3 to 1 pitchers’ duel. Saskatchewan also had two wins by blowouts versus SAIT and Lethbridge and dropped two close games to Calgary and Regina.

With reachable fences came some massive, game-changing home runs. Some offensive highlights include home runs by Chloe Mayer (2, Calgary), Sheyanne Lawrence (1, UBCO), Carleigh McCune (1, UBCO), and Kelsey Sonntag (1, Saskatchewan).

Noteworthy pitching performances were Emma Stephens (Calgary), Mikhaela Muir (shutout, UBCO), Tori Stelmachowich (Regina), and Ainsley Olson (Lethbridge).

Next weekend is the last weekend of the regular season and features regional action with games in Kelowna and Saskatoon.
