Mount Royal University needed a hero on Sunday at Joe Gallagher Field, and Ava Wurzer delivered. With the game tied 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh, the fifth-year stepped up and doubled home the winning run, sealing a 4-3 walk-off victory over University of Regina.
For Wurzer, the moment wasn’t about mechanics or overthinking the situation; it was about staying simple. She said her only focus in the box was finding her pitch and driving her teammate in, a mindset that’s serving her well in her final collegiate season.
“These moments are so incredibly special,” Wurzer said. “Going into my last year with MRU, last year of softball in general because I’m done my five years, I just really want to cherish these moments. Getting to perform for my teammates and then seeing the love I’m getting back is everything to me. I’m here for my teammates. I play for my teammates.”

Wurzer finished the day with two hits and an RBI, but it was the final swing that mattered most. A fitting exclamation point in what she made clear is a season she’s savoring one moment at a time.
